Review-cipes: Crewel, Glow & Scarlet

Having had zero time lately for full-on reviews, I decided to give you, dear readers, a quick reading update in the form of book recipes:

Crewel -- by Gennifer Albin

Spin:

1 thread Mad Men
2 skeins Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale
A snippet of quiet determination

Weave together in a tapestry of intrigue and subversion, where young women have power over the very fabric of the world ... but not over their own lives.

Similar Warps & Wefts: Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, Wither by Lauren DeStefano, Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore, Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Glow -- by Amy Kathleen Ryan

Synthesize:

2 at-odds starships en route to a new planet
1 vial of genetically induced infertility
A questioning of religiosity and reproductive ethics

Add: A healthy dose of action, a heroine questioning her "match," and a dash of agrarian, a dot of art.

Related Flavors: Across the Universe, by Beth Revis, Divergent by Veronica Roth
Similar Themes: Bumped, by Megan McCafferty, Wither by Lauren DeStefano, Matched by Allie Condie

Scarlet -- Marissa Meyer

Pack in a Basket:

Red hooded sweatshirt
Farm goods to trade
Grandma's Lunar secrets
Brainwashing skills

Warning: This combination may attract Wolf and/or Malcolm Reynolds-esque Captain -- both of which will inevitably make life more complicated for you.

Similarly Tasty Snacks: Cinder by Marissa Meyer ( ...you have read this already, yes??), Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce, Paranormalcy by Kiersten White, Fire by Kristin Cashore

Have you read any of these? What were your thoughts?

Any other ingredients to toss in the review mix?

Any other book recommendations with similar flavors to these?

  1. I've read Glow and Crewel--I liked the characters and conflict in Glow and loved the world in Crewel but didn't really like its characters and plot so much. It's probably just me :) I actually thought Glow had some more Lord of the Flies elements to it, with the whole power struggle between the boys. YOU'VE READ WITHER? The Chemical Garden series is probably one of my all time faves :D I just finished Sever and it's amazing :D ALSO, when you get the chance, I HIGHLY recommend the BIRTHMARKED series by Caragh O'brien, if you get a chance. MINNA actually gave me the BIRTHMARKED vibe (due to the description+POV style) and BIRTHMARKED is amazing :D

  3. This is such a creative idea for quick book reviews! Love it! I currently have CREWEL sitting on my e-reader and SCARLET on my coffee table waiting to be read. Too many books, too little time.

  4. I like the idea of writing these reviews in the form of recipes! I've read Glow and Scarlet (and loved them both), but I haven't gotten around to Crewel yet even though I've been meaning to.
