Phonics Alphabet Playlist for
Preschool & Kindergarten!
This is a masterlist of all the best phonics-based songs I have found on You Tube.
These are videos that go beyond the standard alphabet song (there's nothing wrong with the standard alphabet song .... but it's also not particularly useful to kids learning to read, because they need to learn letter sounds, not just letter names).
The first set of songs on the list teach the letter sounds, with a focus on the short vowel sounds and hard consonants that almost all phonics programs teach first. A few of the songs teach all the sounds that each letter makes, both short and long, hard and soft. All the videos were rigorously pre-screened by my 6 year old and 4 year old and upvoted and downvoted accordingly. As it turns out (no surprise to mum) they like opposite things! So there's something for every kid on this list. Seriously. There's nearly 200 videos on this list! Several of the songs use a lot of movement, ASL, and superheroes, while others (my personal faves) are nice and calming.
After the alphabet songs, I've included videos that focus on one phoneme (letter sound) at a time, so kids have a chance to really spend time learning each letter-sound relationship. The order of the letters will be familiar to those of you using the Get Reading Right phonics progression:
Set 1: STAMP COG
Set 2: HID FULL RIB
Set 3: ZEN JKVWY
This phoneme sequence is quite similar to other programs such as Jolly Phonics and Teach Your Monster to Read.
I'll be constantly adding new videos as I find them, and do let me know if you know of excellent ones that I've missed!
