Top Ten Tuesday: Top 10 Books to Read in a Day

I interpreted today's Top Ten Tuesday from The Broke and the Bookish to mean: Books I literally couldn't put down.

Now of course there are lots of reasons that books are un-put-downable, so here is my Top 10, organized into sub-categories:

I Can't Put it Down Or ...

"... the Boogey-Man will get me!"
You've all been there, admit it. It's late at night. Everyone else is in bed. You started this book with a tummy full of dinner and a living room bathed in sunset. But now you're trapped. If you put this book down and go to bed, you'll need to turn off the light, and we all know that the only thing keeping the monsters safely under your bed is the happy little glow from your bedside table. Must Keep Reading.

1. Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins  -- Obviously. I read this in one sitting and didn't turn off the light afterward (having 100% convinced myself Cato was somewhere in the house, waiting).
2. Sphere by Michael Crichton -- I vividly remember reading this in middle school until the wee hours of the morning. I'm pretty sure I couldn't even fall asleep until the sun came up.
3. The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan -- I wouldn't say I exactly enjoyed reading this, but I certainly made sure I finished it before it got dark out! I am a total horror/zombie wimp.
4. Coraline by Neil Gaiman -- Ok and probably anything by Roald Dahl. Button eyes? I mean this just totally creeps me out! Yes, this is MG, but Mr. Gaiman knows how to make me cringe.

".... one of the Characters Might Actually Die!!!"
Most of the time, you know the main character's going to make it through. Everything's going to be fine. But sometimes you hit a book that makes you wonder. And if not the main character, maybe one or two or twenty of his/her friends aren't going to make it!? What? No!!!

5.  Fire by Kristin Cashore - This book was so good!!
6. The Partials by Dan Wells and/or Maze Runner by James Dashner - Who's going to make it? Not everyone. That's for sure.
7. Delirium by Lauren Oliver - Aggg! How will it end? Cliffhanger? What? Nooooo

".... I'll Never Be Able to Keep it All Straight!"
Sometimes you start a book and soon realize it's just best to stay immersed in the story to see how it all pans out. If you stop for air, you might never figure out where (or in the case of Tempest, when) you were when you left off.

8. Circle Nine by Anne Heltzel
9. Chime by Franny Billingsley
10. Tempest by Julie Cross

Now I could cheat and add a whole bunch of other books that I loved to death and could read over and over without putting down *cough* Divergent *cough* Sabriel ... but that would be cheating.

So what books do you recommend reading in a day?

  1. It took me weeks to finish Chime by Billingsley because I was listening to it on audiobooks. I ended up liking it but it took a long time to get to that point.

  3. Hi there, just popping in... I just bought 'Partials' the other day, can't wait to get to it!

  4. OMG YES the button eyes in Coraline! That was absolutely the creepiest description ever (and in the movie)! One of my friends is a children's librarian and she went as Other Mother for Halloween - so creepy!

Great picks! I hope to read Partials soon, I've heard great things.

  5. I took longer than a day to read Delirium, though that might have been because it just didn't 'grab' me at the beginning!

Totally agree with Fire though - got through that one pretty quickly!

    Great list!

  6. Cary Ryan's series is totally creepy. I stayed up to finish the first one, too!

  7. I've only read one of these books. Delirium looks really good but a cliffhanger you say? Eek! I might have to wait till the sequel is out before I attempt it!

  8. @ Anne - I totally know what you mean about Chime. It's a very twisty and densish book. Once I'd sat down and dedicated myself to it, I did end up loving it!

@ Book Slave & Ash - Partials is really quite good! It is a little on the long side, and heavy on the military aspects, but really kept my interest!

@ Ash -- eeek that is a dang awesome Halloween costume. Wish I'd thought of that!

@ Grad Student - Ahhh I know! Ryan's zombies are --eeeee. It makes me want to pull my feet up onto my chair just thinking about it.

@para -- sequel (Pandemonium) is out! go for it!!

  9. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has to finish scary stories as fast as I can! At least then I'll be able to sleep (maybe).

  10. I LOVE your reasons for not being able to put down books! :) Also, I wouldn't have been able to sleep if I thought there was even a slight chance Cato was hiding somewhere in my house...
I really need to start Fire, I own it but I haven't read it yet... And I'm still kind of scared to start Pandemonium as I've heard it also ends on a cliffhanger...

  11. Great Choices!! I have been wanting to read the Maze Runner series for a while now, I need to get on that.

  12. What a fantastic list!

Here's my Top Ten. Would love for you to stop by.

  13. The forest of hand and teeth is also on my list! Such a good book. And I choose Stardust from Neil Gaiman, but Coraline was great! Did you see the movie? I thought it was awesome :D

I'm reading THG right now and it definitely deserves his place on the list! :) Chime, fire & the partials are high on my list. It seems like are taste is pretty similar ^^

  14. Definitely wouldn't be able to keep Tempest straight if I read that in a week instead of a day. I loved Delirium; it almost ended up on my list. I should look into Maze Runner. Great list!

Thanks for visiting my Top Ten.

  15. Hahaha I love how you separated your list! I've read several of these, but there are definitely a few I need to check out. For me, The Hunger Games fell into the "one of the Characters Might Actually Die!!" because I was semi-convinced Peeta was going to be killed off and HAD to know if he was. Have you read Pandemonium yet? That's another major cliffhanger. AHHH!

  16. Thanks everyone for stopping by!

@ Daisy & Hannah -- I haven't read Pandemonium yet, but I can't wait! I'd heard it ends on a cliffhanger, but I think Oliver does them really well!

@ Mel -- I love both Stardust and Coraline, and I thought the movies were well done in both cases too. Gaiman is a master!

@ Manda -- Yeah there were so many timelines in Tempest I could hardly keep them sorted. I thought the way Cross handled time travel was fascinating though!

@ Hannah -- Me too! I realized when I made this that many of the books could really be cross-categorized. I was definitely pretty worried about Peeta there for awhile.

  17. Great list! I have to absolutely agree with The Hunger Games. In fact, I have to confess - I pretty much locked myself in last Saturday and read all three books in one day. I was hooked!

I need to read Delirium so bad - I have the book, I just haven't gotten around to it.

New follower here, btw :). I hope you don't mind me commenting!

  18. I loved Chime and the Maze Runner! Totally great one-day reads (although I admittedly took much longer with each of them). Glad to see Circle Nine on your list, that's one I've been curious about but haven't really read much reaction to...

  19. Great books! I've been seeing Delirium on so many lists today and they're all saying different things about it ... I'm reading it now and I wish I could devote a whole chunk of time to just finish it to see what's going to happen! I bought Tempest a few weeks ago and can't wait to start reading it ... I love the cover for it!

    Great list! :)

  20. The only Gaiman book I've read was The Graveyard Book, which I loved. Do you think Coraline is as good?

    ReplyDelete
  21. @ Reve -- Yeah I don't always go in for the YA romance, but Delirium was pretty dang good! Read it!

@ Heidi -- Circle Nine was really really good in a really weird way. Though I have mixed feelings about the ending. I wrote a little review of it here.

@ Alison -- I actually haven't read The Graveyard Book, but I would recommend anything by Gaiman, and definitely Coraline! It is MG and in the vein of Roald Dahl.

  22. I'm pretty sure all of these are on my to-read list, except Hunger Games, which I've read! GREAT list :)
