Top Ten Tuesday: Top 10 Books I'd Play Hooky With

It's Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by the The Broke and the Bookish. This week it's Top 10 Books I'd Play Hooky With.

Last week the Top Ten Tuesday was Top 10 on my TBR list. So since those were the books I'm most anticipating, I'm interpreting this week's theme as being Top 10 Old Favorites. All the stories listed below are a perfect blend of cozy, familiar, and satisfying as a warm mug of hot chocolate. Perfect for a call-in-sick-and-curl-up-on-the-couch-day. I mentioned some of these in my Valentine's Day post, but the ones here are only the very creamiest of creams, in no particular order:

Top 10 Books I'd Play Hooky With:
Old Favorites
1. Anne of Green Gables (the series) - L.M. Montgomery
2. The Witch of Blackbird Pond - Elizabeth George Speare
3. The Chronicles of Narnia (starting with the Magician's Nephew) - C.S. Lewis
4. Little Women (the series, most importantly: Little Men and Jo's Boys) - Louisa May Alcott
5. The Dark is Rising  (series) - Susan Cooper
6. Many Waters - Madeline L'Engle
7. A Little Princess - Frances Hodgson Burnett
8. Fairy Rebel - Lynne Reid Banks
9. Lord of the Rings (series)- J.R.R. Tolkien
10. Harry Potter (series) - J.K. Rowling

Runners-Up: Little House on the Prairie - Laura Ingalls Wilder //Search for Delicious - Natalie Babbit //The Book of Three - Lloyd Alexander

  1. Those macarons look delicious! I'd love to go play hookey with them :P

Little Men is my favourite of the Little Women series. I'd love to curl up with my copy and call in sick! :)

  2. Ahhh macarons ... after spending $12 on four of them last week, and $8 the week before, I have decided that it is high time I figure out how to make them! I love Little Men and Jo's Boys. Way too many people stop at Little Women and they are seriously missing out!

  5. I have read and loved many of the books on your list! Anne of Green Gables was on my list (I should have said the whole series, too), but I could have included Little Women, A Little Princess and Harry Potter, too. I'm definitely going to have to check out the books on your list that I haven't read because you clearly have great taste in books :)

  9. Old favorites would be a great way to spend a day off! I vaguely remember a couple of these from my childhood and a few are on my "I'm ashamed I haven't read this" list. Haha, I'll through everything eventually!

  10. Is it bad that I look at this list and think the movies would be a better motive for me to play hooky? Granted, I loved the Chronicles of Narnia. However I couldn't get into Anne of Green Gables; I prefer the movies. But I can completely agree with these books (or movies in my case). Great list!

Thanks for visiting my Top Ten.

  12. @ don't take -- yeah I feel like I'm inundated with new books so often that it would be great to have a day reading blasts from my past.

@ manda -- I actually prefer the later "Anne" books - Anne of Windy Poplars and after ... featuring Anne's kids!

@ Kate -- Haha, yep. They are definitely my go-to comfort books!

  13. Playing hooky with Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings is always SOLID. Those are perfect hooky day books! Little Women has a special place in my heart, too, because my namesake is one of the characters!
Great list, and thanks so much for visiting my blog yesterday :-)
